The simple version

So what is AI?

AI illustration: robot and hand holding a brain

AI is a computer that learns by looking at heaps of examples — and then uses what it learned to do a job.

It's a bit like how you learned to recognise a dog. Nobody handed you a rulebook — you just saw lots of dogs, and now you know one when you see it. AI learns the same way, except it can look at millions of examples, way more than any person ever could. It isn't really "thinking" like us — it's spotting patterns and making very good guesses.
1
Show it lots of examples
2
It finds the patterns
3
It makes a smart guess
4
The more it practises, the better it gets

Subject: Quick project catch-up Hi Sarah, Can we grab 30 minutes next week to chat about the project and next steps? Are you free Tuesday or Wednesday? Thanks, John

🤖 AI
B Email Two

Subject: Project Meeting Hi Sarah, I hope you're doing well. I'd like to schedule a meeting next week to discuss project progress and align on next steps. Please let me know your availability—I'll do my best to accommodate. Thank you, and I look forward to connecting. Kind regards, John

WhyThe AI email is polished and professional, but uses generic language, em dashes (—), and American spelling (for example, "optimize"), and lacks the personal details that often make human communication feel authentic.

Using AI Well

When AI Is Usually Safe to Use

AI is generally lower risk when it:

Lower risk when it
  • Helps with admin tasks
  • Summarises or drafts information
  • Supports thinking and decision-making
  • Has a human reviewing the output
  • Doesn't make the final decision
Examples
  • Drafting notes
  • Summarising policies
  • Meeting minutes
  • Brainstorming ideas
Rule of thumbAI assists. Humans decide.

Using AI Well

When to Use Caution

AI needs more caution when it:

More caution when it
  • Impacts safety
  • Impacts customers
  • Uses sensitive information
  • Makes decisions about people
  • Operates without meaningful human oversight
Examples
  • Emergency response
  • Safety-critical decisions
  • Performance management
  • Customer risk scoring
Rule of thumbThe bigger the consequence if AI is wrong, the more oversight is needed.
TasGas Service Connect · 2026

Using AI Well

Before using AI, ask yourself

  1. What could go wrong if this is wrong?
  2. Who could be impacted?
  3. Am I checking the output?
  4. Would I be comfortable explaining this decision to a customer, colleague, or regulator?
